Lawrence Parks and Rec to Offer Youth Cycling Camps

Lawrence Parks and Rec Summer Bike Camp Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is offering youth the opportunity to be physically active throughout the afternoon, as well as learn bicycle safety through its new summer camp offering Youth Cycling Camp.

This week-long camp will provide participants with the opportunity to explore some of Lawrence’s parks through bike rides. Camp will be headquartered in Hobbs Park, 702 E. 11th St., and travel will be done on sidewalks and there will be a focus on safe riding and street crossing to other community parks where children will participate in games and craft activities.

Youth Cycling Camp is open to children eight years-old to 12 years-old and is being offered noon – 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, June 6-10 and June 20-24. Cost is $90 per child, per week.

All participants must provide their own bike and helmet. In the event of inclement weather, camp will be held at East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St.

Great Trail Map Resource for Lawrence

One of the local Lawrence bike shops just posted a really great new resource.

People looking for new places to ride your bike can visit the “Maps” page of Sunflower’s site. They’ve assembled (and will continue to compile) a list of great riding routes around Lawrence for all skill levels of riders.

Two great ones for families are below.. but be sure to check them all out!

Family Ride: Outside for a Better Inside and the Kaw
3.0 miles
Getting to the new trail along the Kansas River (The Kaw) involves some sidewalk riding along Kentucky St., but once you’re on the trail it’s car-free along the river and then around the old quarry (now a lake) that forms the Outside for a Better Inside Trail. Plenty of opportunities to see wildlife along the river and feel some wilderness in the heart of the City.

Family Ride: Burroughs Creek Trail
6.4 miles
Riding with the family usually means finding car-free zones that offer distractions on the ride and shorter distances. The Burroughs Creek Trail, a former rail line ticks all the boxes in that regard once you get on the trail. Playgrounds, water fountains, and a railroad grade (nothing over 3%) are hallmarks of this very casual ride. Take in as much as you like and head back Downtown for some ice cream!

Thanks for Coming Out To The Fall Community Bike Ride

The rain finished the night before, there was a sigh of relief when we could see the final rays of sun through the clearing skies to the west on Friday night.

Our latest ride held Saturday September 19th starting in the Haskell Indian Nations University stadium parking lot delighted more than 100 guests riding along the Burroughs Creek Trail. Members of Lawrence Central Rotary with the help of our sponsors and though applying for grants and fundraisers were able to hand out all of the 80 bright neon safety vests we purchased and fitted 42 brand new helmets (mostly to children) to keep them safe while riding their bike not just that day but for many days, weeks, and months to come.

But, that just speaks to the numbers. Everyone who attended had a great morning and the participants had fun… and that is the key thing. People having fun, being active, using their bikes, possibly seeing new trails, and meeting new friends along the way.

We look forward to seeing even more people again next summer for more Lawrence Community Bike rides!

Lawrence’s First Fall Community Bike Ride

It was beautiful early fall Saturday morning when approximately 100 riders and volunteers descended on the Haskell Indian Nations’ Stadium parking lot for our first fall Community Bike Ride.

The mile and a half ride up Burroughs Creek Trail and back made for a great quick three mile for riders of all experience levels.

There’s a lot of people to thank:

Anderson Rentals for the tent, tables, and porta-potties
Douglas County Safe Kids, LMH, and Lawrence Fire and Medical members who came out to fit kids who needed free helmets.
The team from The Merc for the great healthy snacks.
Sunflower Bike for the complimentary bike checks.
Team GpVeloTek and Lawrence Bicycle club and other volunteers for keeping people safe out on the course.
Haskell Indian Nations University for the use of the parking lot as a staging area.
Lawrence Unchained Bicycle Co-Op for course support and letting people know about your great work!
And the incredible support of our sponsors: Lawrence Eye Care Associates, Ortho Kansas, Econolodge, McDonalds, Bev West Creative.
